. john kerry did the job and stood in for mitt romney in the president's camp. and then standing in for the president in romney's debate preps, the silver haired guy in the pink shirt is ohio senator rob portman. and, in fact, portman has really become the go-to guy for republican candidates who need a sparg partner. he's really good at this. but here's the thing, he's never really talked publicly about his role, the preparation and how his debate preps have gone. until now. because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mcc

? are they that important? >> absolutely. you know, i, eight years ago, was on the kerry campaign. and john kerry came into that first debate and changed the entire dynamic of that race. we were eight points down. and we came out of the debates tied or even a little bit ahead. so absolutely, debates are very important. it's the first time that voters really get to see these two candidates side by side. and to compare not just their styles, because i know a lot of people will be talking about style tonight. but really their visions. the details, the specifics, where they want to take the country. how they're answering some of these tough questions, and whether they're giving real answers. so absolutely. i think mitt romney has an opportunity to shake up the race tonight. you know, obviously, you know, expectations, both sides have been playing the expectations game. the reality is that challengers win the first debate more often than not. you know, you might think that's me playing expectations, but that's also a fact. and we know that mitt romney is a good debater. the president's a pretty good debate

, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what the real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health care, about the role of government, what the president will do, according to top campaign aides is say, yes, look, the economy still has a long way to go. but it is in a much better place than it was and it is heading in the right direction. mitt romney will say that the president has had time to fix the economy, and there has been a lot of broken promises. so that's what we'll expect from both of the candidates as they take on each other tonight during the first debate. >> dan lothian repo
